The WellnessMats Original Anti-Fatigue Mat is a comfortable, well-constructed standing-desk mat.
We like its sturdy 100% polyurethane construction and its clean, simple design. This mat lets you stand quite comfortably for hours on end.
Don’t dismiss the WellnessMats Original just because it falls at the bottom of our current list of 5 Best Standing-Desk Mats. We carefully vetted this list before we bought the mats and were reasonably certain that all of the mats would fare well, and indeed this was the case.
Pick this mat if you favor a softer standing surface and want the assurances of its 20-year warranty.
Materials and Construction
The WellnessMats Original is made of solid, molded, 100% polyurethane. It’s not as dense as most of the other mats we tested in June 2016, but it is solid and feels well-constructed.
The model we tested is 36″ wide by 24″ deep and 3/4″ thick. This gave us plenty of room to adopt different stances and postures as we stood at a variety of standing desks during the evaluation period.
Materials and Construction score: 9/10 (90%)
Comfort is a very subjective concept. Two of our testers found the relative squishiness of the WellnessMats mat uncomfortable when working in bare feet, but another reported, “It was comfortable while wearing shoes and standing on it, but it was exponentially more comfortable while standing on it barefoot.”
Digging deeper into the reports of discomfort, we found that it’s relatively squishy resistance makes it easier for your feet to sink unevenly into this mat. This isn’t a big deal if you wear shoes, which help to distribute your weight, but if you go bare foot or work in your stocking feet, your heels can sink more deeply into the mat than your toes, resulting in compromised posture.
One of our testers reported, “I think I should try a firmer mat next time, because in shoes it just felt really weird, and barefoot I think it left my feet a little more tired than they would have been on just carpet, perhaps because my heels sink in too much relative to the rest of the foot. I understand that part of the point is to be aware of posture and move around, but I think this one made me more fidgety than necessary to achieve that.”
I also noticed what I call “heel drop” in my time on this mat and experienced a similar fidgetiness when I was working in stocking feet. By “heel drop” I mean the sense of the heels sinking in to the mat more deeply than the toes. For me, this sometimes resulted in mild shoulder and neck pain, which I attributed to postural adjustments rippling up my body to compensate for my altered foot posture. During one stretch, I also noticed light pain under the bottom of my kneecaps, which I attributed to hyperextension of my knee joint as my heels sunk into the mat.
Still, if you wear shoes most of the time (as I suspect most office workers do), this is a perfectly comfortable mat.
Comfort Score: 17/25 (68%)
Our testers reported very few effects on their productivity during their time on the WellnessMats mat. About half reported a neutral impact and about a quarter each reported a slight improvement or a slight negative impact.
Productivity Score: 18/25 (72%)
Standing mats are sometimes called anti-fatigue mats, and all of them are designed to encourage micro-level movements. That’s a big part of how they prevent fatigue.
“Interestingness” goes beyond this fatigue-prevention level of movement. We use the term here to measure how much a mat naturally inspires and encourages curiosity about the surface on which you’re standing, resulting in even more subtle, natural movement as you work at your standing desk.
This emphasis on small natural movements is based in our focus at Well9to5 on the “active office.” Stationary standing can be almost as damaging to your body as the “sitting disease” hazards you are standing up to fight. Being active as you stand can prevent or reverse the orthopedic damage that can result from standing perfectly still for long stretches.
The WellnessMats standing mat encouraged a bit more natural movement than firmer mats without negatively affecting productivity, so it scores just above the middle of our (admittedly arbitrary) interestingness scale.
Interestingness Score: 13/20 (65%)
This mat looks perfectly safe to us. Its beveled edges and sturdy construction keep the edges from rolling up to create a tripping hazard. Its bottom surface texture resisting slipping and sliding on both concrete and carpeted floors. It didn’t off-gas any pungent aromas when we opened the box it was delivered in.
Safety Score: (4.5/5) 90%
The WellnessMats mat tends to collect a little bit of dust and dirt in normal use but easily wipes clean with just a damp towel.

Overall Rating: 76%
We compute the overall rating by adding up the number of total points earned and dividing by the total possible points (which, to simplify the math, is always 100 for any one product category) and then rounding to the nearest whole digit. The rating is expressed as a percentage, but don’t automatically assign a corresponding letter grade based on that percent. This mat’s 75.5 raw score is 90% of the 84 that the highest-rated Topo earned, so if we were grading on a curve, this 76 might actually be an A-. We will never give even the highest-rated product in a category a 100%, mainly because we’ll always leave room in each criterion in our rating system for the possibility of superior products emerging in the future.
Originally designed for home use, especially in the kitchen, the WellnessMats Original has found its way into some offices. Price above is for the 36″ x 24″ model. Also available in larger sizes: 60″ x 48″, 72″ x 48″, and 72″ x 36″.
